Amy's Sunflower Gardens
Athens, Georgia
cut flowers, plant starts, produce, notecards
I look forward every year to growing sunflowers, and so decided to name my small urban farm after these beautiful flowers. I used the plural form of “gardens” instead of “garden” to reflect the fact that turning an oddly-shaped lot with trees scattered throughout it into a small farm meant I needed to designate many small areas of our property to be growing areas, to maximize what sunlight is available. My farm is not comprised of long rows of crops, but rather shorter beds, scattered throughout our lot. This gives me good opportunity to practice a variety of intercropping, study micro climates, and rotate crops.

40 Thistle Farm
Colbert, Georgia
40 Thistle Farm was born out of a desire to grow nutritious and delicious food responsibly and share it with friends. What started with plants in pots, grew into a backyard garden, followed by chickens and rabbits. Although we did once know a girl who claimed to have milked a rabbit, we were more interested in sheep and goats for our dairy needs which led to a search for more property. The rest is history. We are now a working farm that raises sheep, goats, chickens, and rabbits. Our sheep produce fiber, milk and meat. The goats give us meat and milk which we drink and use to make cheese and soap. We get eggs from the chickens, and the rabbits provide meat and fertilize our vegetable garden. Our farm is intentionally small and diverse for the mutual benefit of land and animals. We work to farm as naturally as possible, with no pesticides or herbicides. While we do have limited numbers of product for sale seasonally, we also enjoy sharing knowledge and nature with friends and the community.

ri Lanka is well known for its unique sweets and desserts originated in the country, many years ago. Usually “desserts” are served after the main meals and “sweets” are served in the morning and afternoon tea times. Many Sri Lankan sweets contain domestic spices and syrup (treacle) extracted from the sap of coconut or kithul (Caryota urens) palm trees. In addition to that, many other coconut products such as shredded coconut, coconut milk, and coconut oil are commonly used when preparing those sweets.
